BECID at the Media Literacy Conference 2025

On 23 October, BECID participated in the Media Literacy Conference 2025: “Screens and Souls”, organized by the National Library of Estonia in Rakvere.

The conference focused on the effects of misinformation and information overload on the wellbeing of individuals, communities, and society. The discussions addressed manipulation in digital spaces, the emotional nature of the post-truth information environment, and the challenge of maintaining mental health and information hygiene in an increasingly AI-driven world.

BECID’s senior expert on media literacy, Maria Murumaa-Mengel, delivered an inspiring lecture titled “Social Media Doesn’t Have to Be a Cesspool: How to Teach Civic Courage?”

BECID’s junior researcher on media literacy, Maia Klaassen, moderated the panel “Survival on the Battlefield of Narratives”.

Several BECID members were also recognized with awards at the event:

  • Media Literacy Promoter of the Year – Gretel Juhansoo, BECID’s project manager
  • Media Literacy Project of the Year – Digimentor/Inger Klesment, BECID’s media literacy specialist
  • Õhtuleht Special Prize – Gretel Juhansoo

In addition, BECID presented its own Special Recognition Award to Merlin Kirbits — a teacher who opens the doors of the media world to her students through creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

BECID congratulates all the award recipients and participants for their valuable contributions to strengthening media literacy and digital wellbeing in Estonia and beyond.
