BECID WEBINAR | Developing Media Literacy in Estonian Memory Institutions

On 8 December 2025, BECID organised an online webinar titled “Developing Media Literacy in Estonian Memory Institutions”.

The event brought together professionals from galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, providing a space to exchange experiences and reflect on the role of memory institutions in today’s complex information environment.

After the opening session, participants continued in country-based Zoom breakout rooms, where discussions focused on national contexts while also addressing shared challenges across the region. The webinar attracted approximately 152 participants, including around 60 professionals from Estonia.

The sessions explored how memory institutions currently support media literacy, which audiences they most often work with, and what kinds of tools, resources, and skills are needed to respond to emerging information disorders, including disinformation, digital fraud, and AI-generated content.

Across all groups, participants emphasised the need for practical, easy-to-use approaches that can be integrated into daily workflows rather than implemented as separate projects. Topics discussed included working with seniors on digital safety and e-services, engaging young people through interactive and game-based formats, supporting staff competencies, and developing clear guidance materials that institutions can adapt to their local needs.

The discussions also highlighted the value of sharing experiences and learning from existing practices within and across the Baltic countries. Insights from research conducted by University of Tartu students, based on interviews with memory institution professionals, provided an important evidence base for the discussions and helped identify both strengths and gaps in current media literacy efforts.

The webinar offered valuable input for shaping the next steps of the BECID webinar series and future activities aimed at supporting the GLAM sector in the Baltic region.

The next webinar will take place on 2 February 2026, from 16:00 to 17:00. The exact topic will be announced soon.
