It has now been updated and adapted specially for the AHHAA science centre environment, with examples that children and families can easily recognise from daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What Is the Propawheel?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Propawheel is an educational wheel that introduces common influence and manipulation techniques used in communication, advertising, social media and public debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By spinning the wheel, you land on one technique at a time and learn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what the technique is;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how it works;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where you might encounter it in real life;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how to notice it before it affects your thinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Spin the Wheel and Learn the Tricks!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are the eight influence techniques you can explore with the Propawheel at AHHAA, with examples you might recognise from everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table has-small-font-size\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">1. Attacking the Person Instead of the Idea<br><\/mark><br><strong>\u201cThat person can\u2019t be right \u2013 just look how stupid they look!\u201d<\/strong><br><br>Sometimes people stop talking about the actual topic and start attacking the person instead: their looks, age, background, voice, or personality.<br>Instead of discussing what is being said, attention is shifted to who is saying it.<br>You might see this in comment sections, arguments at school, online videos or streams.<br><br>It\u2019s a common trick to distract from the real issue.<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">2. Labelling<\/mark><br><br><strong>\u201cAll countryside kids are like that!\u201d<\/strong><br><br>Labelling means putting a simplified and often negative tag on a whole group of people. Such as<br>\u201cnerds\u201d, \u201cweirdos\u201d, \u201crich kids\u201d, \u201ccountry kids\u201d.<br><br>Once a label spreads, people start believing it without questioning. It creates a strong <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u201cus vs them\u201d<\/mark><\/strong> feeling and stops us from seeing people as individuals.<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">3. The \u201cI\u2019m Just a Regular Person\u201d Trick<\/mark><br><br><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t use fancy words \u2014 I just say it like it is!\u201d<\/strong><br><br>This technique is used to look ordinary, trustworthy, down-to-earth.<br><br>The speaker avoids complicated explanations and presents themselves as <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>\u201cone of us\u201d<\/strong>.<\/mark> Experts and specialists may be made to look unnecessary or suspicious.<br><br>You\u2019ll often see this in influencer videos, in product reviews, in motivational talks.<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">4. Borrowing Fame<\/mark><br><br><strong>\u201cEven famous musicians use this product!\u201d<\/strong><br><br>Here, popularity is borrowed from celebrities, influencers, and even national symbols.<br><br>The idea is simple:<br>if you like the famous person, maybe you\u2019ll like the product or message too.<br><br>You see this a lot in advertising, social media, sponsorships, brand collaborations. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">5. The \u201cIt\u2019s Just a Joke!\u201d Trick<\/mark><br><br><strong>\u201cRelax, it was only a joke!\u201d<\/strong><br><br>Someone says something insulting, hurtful or extreme, and when others react, they claim it was just humour.<br>This allows the person to say almost anything, avoid responsibility, still send a signal to people who agree.<br><br>These \u201cjokes\u201d spread especially fast online because angry reactions create clicks and views.<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">6. The Herd Effect<\/mark><br><br><strong>\u201cEveryone already uses this \u2014 80% of people have it!\u201d<\/strong><br><br>People naturally want to belong, fit in, feel safe with the group. <br>The herd effect works by making it seem like <strong>\u201ceveryone else has already chosen this\u201d<\/strong>.<br><br>You encounter this in advertising, trends and viral challenges, app and game promotions.<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">7. \u201cUs vs Them\u201d<\/mark><br><br><strong>\u201cWe care about you.
