This introductory session opened the programme and laid the groundwork for the thematic webinar taking place on 8 December.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting also provided an overview of the ongoing study carried out by University of Tartu students, who conducted interviews with professionals from libraries, museums, archives and galleries across Estonia. Their interviews explore how memory institutions currently support media, information and digital competences, which audiences they reach, which resources they rely on, and where significant gaps remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the webinar, we discussed why media literacy is essential in today\u2019s information environment and what roles memory institutions play in supporting it. Participants were also introduced to early insights emerging from the students\u2019 research, along with key questions that will receive a more in-depth treatment during the December seminar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little over 50 invited participants and GLAM professionals attended the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What Do Memory Institutions Need Most?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the webinar, we carried out the first group discussion, asking participants to reflect on the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u201cWhich knowledge, materials, training or solutions do you currently lack the most in your work?\u201d<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked them to focus specifically on media, information and digital competences. In other words: <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">how can we as organisers be most helpful to them in the future, and where should we focus our efforts?<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several clear themes emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support in <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">AI literacy<\/mark>: how to teach it, how to recognise safe tools, how to recommend platforms responsibly, and how to understand the limits and risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better understanding of <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">AI reliability<\/mark>, copyright implications, data protection and responsible prompting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">digital security<\/mark> know-how.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clear guidance on <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">how to recognise misinformation, scams and manipulations<\/mark>, and how to help visitors do the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shift from teaching mainly <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">information retrieval<\/mark> to also teaching <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">media awareness<\/mark>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need for <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">media-literate staff<\/mark> in institutions, not only resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demand for <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">learning materials<\/mark>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>short instructional videos;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>step-by-step written guides;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>regularly updated materials on new fraud schemes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ready-to-use educational clips for trainings (5-minute videos suitable for learners of different ages).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A need for <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">clearer support structures<\/mark>, especially when other institutions (banks, authorities, service providers) direct people to libraries for help with e-services. Participants emphasised that these institutions should contribute as well with technological support, updated equipment, or occasional on-site assistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need for advice on <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">how to reach audiences<\/mark> and motivate them to attend media literacy sessions in the library.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognition that <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">individual support<\/mark> is often most effective for users, even though some topics could be addressed in small groups (up to five people).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demand for <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">training for staff working with older adults<\/mark> and low-digital-skills learners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>A Strong Start to the Series<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seminar offered an encouraging start with a clear sense of shared purpose across the GLAM community. Participants provided valuable insight into the everyday challenges memory institutions face, helping us shape the upcoming sessions to better meet their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We look forward to continuing the conversation on <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffcd05\" class=\"has-inline-color\">8 December<\/mark><\/strong>, when University of Tartu students will present the results of their interviews with memory institution professionals across Estonia.
