BECID has launched a new Baltic-wide webinar series for professionals working in memory institutions – galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (the GLAM sector). Held every two months, the webinars provide a platform for practitioners and researchers to share experiences, learn from each other, and discuss media literacy, information hygiene, and misinformation.
The aim of the series is to connect the GLAM sector across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, creating a network for exchanging media literacy practices, educational materials, and collaboration opportunities.
The webinars also help strengthen ties between researchers, teachers, and cultural professionals across the region.
GLAM-institutions in Estonia – libraries, museums, archives, and galleries – play an increasingly important role in supporting media literacy and helping communities navigate the digital environment.
GLAM-institutions support media literacy through three main types of activities:
- Individual digital assistance, including help with e-services, identifying scams, and verifying online information;
- Trainings and public lectures on digital skills, online safety, misinformation, and AI;
- Educational programmes and exhibitions, where museums and archives use their collections to teach source criticism, history, propaganda, and critical thinking.
GLAM-institutions also face major challenges: limited funding and time, rapidly changing technology, difficulty reaching certain groups (especially working-age adults and youth), and gaps in digital skills among older adults. Growing volumes of misinformation, increasingly sophisticated scams, and the spread of AI-generated content further increase the pressure on staff.
Digitalisation has created both new opportunities and new demands. On the one hand, the need for digital guidance has grown significantly, strengthening the role of memory institutions as community support hubs. On the other hand, fast-paced technological change, outdated equipment, and resource shortages make it difficult to keep up.
Despite these challenges, GLAM institutions remain key actors in promoting critical thinking and helping communities navigate today’s information landscape.
Each session focuses on a specific theme or country, highlighting best practices and local experiences. Participants include GLAM-sector professionals and media literacy experts from all three Baltic states.
