Last week on the 14th of Aufust our BECID experts had the opportunity to take part in Haridustreff to share ideas on teaching digital skills in schools. As BECID experts, we were delighted to contribute with three practical workshops that looked at digital safety, media literacy, and the role of AI in education.
Inger Klesment introduced methods that help the youngest students understand digital safety. For example, she showed how children can learn to create strong and safe passwords through interactive games — turning a serious topic into something fun and memorable. All of the approaches were designed to be entirely screen-free, making them easy to integrate into everyday classroom practice. Teachers also received ready-to-use activity descriptions and materials to take directly into their lessons.

Associate professor Maria Murumaa-Mengel led a hands-on session where participants explored how media literacy can be integrated into subjects like chemistry, Estonian, and even PE. The workshop highlighted simple ways to strengthen students’ critical skills while adding value to regular lessons.

In the third workshop Inger Klesment unpacked the world of AI, showing how tools like ChatGPT and Copilot work, what opportunities they create for schools, and what risks and responsibilities they bring. The session gave teachers a balanced overview of the ethical, legal, and practical dimensions of AI in education.

For BECID, participating in Haridustreff was an excellent opportunity to support teachers by providing practical knowledge, ready-to-use resources, and guidance to confidently navigate the digital age in the classroom. Through our workshops, we aimed to equip educators with methods and tools that can be directly applied in their teaching, from promoting digital safety and media literacy to understanding the role of artificial intelligence in learning.
We are grateful to have been part of Haridustreff and to all participants for their engagement and thoughtful discussions, which made the experience both inspiring and rewarding.
